Gallienus’ books, numismatics
Indispensable despite mistakes. Unfortunately out of stock with the publisher…Good luck finding one…
Obviously in my top 3! long out of print, this book was selling for gold on the second-hand market. Reissued a few years ago! A must-have!
Super-useful pocket books, much more up to date than goebl’s MIR, (only for the rome antoninianus). In French, but you don’t need to read french to use them!
also available on bnumis.com
Only on Milan but very interesting to own! and useful! (even more so for those who aren’t lucky enough to have the Mir).
Only on the joint kingdom. It’s a pity that the rarity indexes aren’t sharper (and there are a few attribution errors), but it’s a must-have!
Reissue of an article by Otto Voetter, “Die Münzen des Kaisers Gallienus und seiner Familie,” published in two parts in Numismatische Zeitschrift 1901, pp. 117–147, and 1902, pp. 73–110. XXX plates (close to the original scale).
Gallienus’book, history
J.-M. Doyen‘s thesis. Much more refined than the MIR (unfortunately Goebl didn’t always take it into account). Great for understanding Milan, but without an index and a bit complicated to find coin references and rarities…but Indispensable and free!
Geiger has made an important contribution to the reappraisal of Gallienus’ reign, even if no fundamentally new insights have been gained. Unfortunately no English translation available
Unknown in the USA because it’s a French-language novel! But great for those who read French.
Material
These are the magnifying glasses that many French numismatists use. It’s actually a watchmaker’s magnifier, and it’s fantastic for coins!

Zoom x12: useless for collectors, useful for verifying the authenticity of coins
